Sometimes crazy follows you around. In 1996, I produced the somewhat controversial documentary, "Area 51: The Alien Interview". I'm not really a documentary filmmaker, but I did enjoy making that particular film. Which leads us to this footage. In May of this year, I was contacted by a "rare film detective". Not a collector, but a guy who gets paid to find lost films or rare film footage. With new footage from classic films like "Metropolis" being found in the last couple of years, interest is high for rare footage. But it always has been for the RIGHT footage.
I received an email. This "film sleuth" had heard of my documentary. He said he had the only known MOVIE FOOTAGE of ABRAHAM LINCOLN. Now, it is common knowledge that the first practical motion picture camera was not patented until 1891 by Thomas Edison. This guy not only said he had motion picture footage from 1865, 26 years earlier than Edison's camera -- but that the footage was of Lincoln -- the most famous President in U.S. history. It sounded insane, but, I was intrigued enough to reply to the email.
The footage is above, it runs for five and a half seconds. There are 2 seconds and 2 frames alleged to be of Lincoln. And, there is a snippet of SYNCHRONIZED SOUND.
More on Friday, 11/23 -- on background and why I am posting this now. And on my due diligence on the footage.
