Transforming Ownership for Social Equity with J. Philip Thompson, (Deputy Mayor for Strategic Initiatives, New York City), Hilary Abell (Project Equity), Marjorie Kelly (50x50; The Democracy Collaborative), brought to you by the Transforming Ownership Committee under the Community Capital Working Group.
Study after study documents the powerful advances made by employee owned enterprises for workers (often BIPOC) in terms of additional income benefits and retirement savings as well as improved workplace conditions. Local communities, of course, are also direct beneficiaries of such NEXT Economy initiatives, and especially so, during a pandemic when many small and medium sized businesses are threatened with bankruptcy. This interactive session will provide new, detailed information on: 1. The leading role New York City has played in developing policies to support this transformation for community well being, and why conversion plans are spreading to cities across the nation. 2. How converting businesses to employee ownership can meaningfully increase racial equity in the workplace and beyond. 3. Strategies for impact investors seeking participation in intermediary funds that can play a critical role in advancing this process of ESOPERATION (democratic ESOPS and cooperatives). Learn how you can participate in this emerging capital transfer paradigm.
