Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, famed primatologist and founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, visits the Shanghai office of her youth-based nonprofit Roots & Shoots in late 2012. Earlier in the year, Shanghai Roots & Shoots accomplished their goal of planting one million trees in Inner Mongolia to stop desertification. They finished two years ahead of schedule, and now are planning a second Million Tree Project in the region to start in 2013.
Roots & Shoots focuses primarily on educating youth about environmental and social issues. In 22 years, Roots & Shoots has grown from one group of 16 students in Tanzania to thousands of people in more than 130 countries worldwide.
