This 6’ x6’ installation of more 25, 000 pieces of steel ball chain and 25, 000 neodymium magnets was created by the artist Alice Hope and commissioned by the Greene Space in initiation of its Artist in Residency program.
Known for her large scale works with metal and magnets, Alice Hope hung each strand of ball chain on an individual magnet in gradating pattern. The work is held together entirely by magnetism, consequently generating its own measurable magnetic field. Her work often evokes the tension between the desire to touch while sensing touch's destructibility, that space lingering between desire and the forbidden.
Related to the Minimalist tradition and embellished with the Baroque, Hope’s installation is intended to be experienced in situ, and in passing into the evocative programming at Greene Space.
