This is the first of four half hour documentaries focusing on the batik artist Sangodare Gbadegesin Ajala and the work of his adoptive mother Susanne Wenger. Austrian born sculptor Susanne Wenger moved to Osogbo, Nigeria in the 1950's where she is widely credited with reinvigorating the cities artist tradition.
"In the Studio" is an interview of Sangodare in which he describes his unique birth, being the son of a Sango priest, adoption by Susan Wenger at age eleven and subsequent emergence as an artist.
In part two we will meet some of the artists who worked with Suanne and Sangodare over the past fifty years.
In parts three and four Sangodare walks and talks us through the Osun Grove, a world heritage site. It is here where Susanne Wenger and her group of artists created numerous shrines and massive sculptors for which the grove is world famous. Suanne Wenger died in January 2009 at age 94.
