Changes in thermohaline circulation (THC) have been known to change the European and Arctic climate within decades. Knowing if, when, and how a major change in the THC might occur in the mid-term might enable both the public and the private sectors to understand the risks, time horizon, and possible scenarios of major changes in the climate and to adapt to them.
The THOR project has been running from 2008 to 2012 and has been investigating on determining how the THC impacts climate stability in the European and Northern hemisphere.
