LOCOG commissioned Crystal CG to produce an exclusive kit of parts of over 2000 animated graphics for Olympic in-venue sports entertainment. This content is shown on a range of screens in all venues across all Olympic events.
Content includes sports specific graphics, welcome to venue graphics, animated maps, audience participation and anticipation builders, performers visuals for half-time shows to name as well as transition and lower third templates .
The brief was to bring sports presentation to life to create information, entertainment, anticipation, surprise, drama, celebration and multi-sensory experiences. The spectacular atmosphere in the stadia is proof of it’s success.
A team of 21 designers, animators and compositors worked closely with the LOCOG sports presentation team to produce over 264 minutes of content over a 6 months period.
Challenges include high volume of deliverable and keeping design consistency across each venue colour. A key issue was to design for a large number of unconventional screen types and sizes to include LEDs, Omega scoreboards screens, ribbon screen, projection maps on FOP, live sites, Olympic Stadium 8x20m giant LEDs, mobile screens and broadcast which required a great deal of adaptability and diversity.
Crystal worked with LOCOG’s brand guidelines but there was room to add another dimension to the brand with 3D animation.
As part of the Games half-time entertainment Rock The Games, Crystal also designed and produced performer screen visuals for artists to include Chemical Brothers, Pixie Lott and Pet shop boys.
