A recording of Dr. Keir Winesmith's final presentation on his experience to create 'Mapping Future Brisbane' - slq.qld.gov.au/mappingfuturebrisbane - as State Library of Queensland's 2020 Digital Collections Catalyst.
In 2020, State Library put out a call for innovative and creative uses of our collections through our new Digital Collections Catalyst program. Dr. Keir Winesmith became our inaugural Digital Collections Catalyst with a project that uses the library’s historical maps and other inputs to create a machine learning model that visualises different futures for the city.
The predictive mapping project combines knowledge from consultation with the people of Brisbane, research into Brisbane’s history, and a large collection of historical maps of Brisbane into a machine learning model that predicted how Brisbane will change into the future. After the machine learning model predicted a future Brisbane, Keir created a 3D interactive tool for users to create their own future Brisbane.
