Most colon polyps can be removed during a routine colonoscopy. A few, however, due to their size and location, have been traditionally removed through surgery. In this modern age, it seems almost barbaric (not to mention expensive) to resort to surgery as a means to remove something that may not even be cancerous. Fortunately, The Mayo Clinic, Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and many other institutions have discovered a less invasive endoscopic technique called "endoscopic mucosal resection" or EMR. I created this EMR overview from sources at sease.com/polyp. The site contains one patient's actual experience, as well as dozens of useful links and documents. I urge doctors, health plans and other medical providers to learn more.
