Three-time winner of the Best Original Poetry category at the annual Catholic Press Association Awards (2011, 2010, 2004), as well as numerous second and third place CPA awards, Rita Simmonds has written poetry for MAGNIFICAT for more than a decade. Most recently fourteen of her poems were featured in the bestselling MAGNIFICAT Year of Faith Companion.
Versed in Prayer is one of the ways MAGNIFICAT is celebrating the Year of Faith proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI. “Faith is God’s gift and transforms the person deep within,” says Pope Benedict. “Confessing with the lips in turn implies public testimony.”
MAGNIFICAT has organized this event in order to give public witness to faith professing itself through poetry. “I write because reality takes the initiative, and reality can only be seen adequately through faith,” Rita Simmonds says. “I strongly desire that the people who respond to our invitation become aware of a deeper invitation to experience the depth and beauty of the Word made flesh—Jesus, and the Gospels, coming alive in their lives in 2012 in the heart of New York City at the start of this Year of Faith.”
