In the summer of 1978, a failed american spacecraft by the name 'skylab' was to crash from space and fall anywhere between the indian sub-continent and australia. this resulted in some widespread paranoia in the inidan suburbs. for some it felt like the world's end.
We look at what happens in a isolated suburban landscape when they hear of this satellite falling.the town has a motley crew of wierd characters like a monk and the town head who try to save the world from the falling satellite by distributing helmets, a rooster that talks and is considered a god by the simpletons in the village and a barber who thinks his 'mushroom cut ' has taken the world by storm and wants go to bombay and cut the white man's hair.
The world's end is predicted in a issue of 'time' magazine which is read by' samantha' (the foreign girl) and
Narrated by her to adaikala swami (shelter-giver 'monk' ),
Who narrated it to kavasakodi babu( the town head),
Who then narrated it to the people of the village,
Who re-interpreted it to the kids,
Who narrated it to ambattan mama/ barber,
Who re-told it to monk and also said that he wanted to leave the town.
The rooster god talks about a ghost called ‘problem’-who is a primary character that moves the plot forward. the ghost shows samantha the 'time' magazine, shows the the monk the helmet and also helps the kids bring back to life a dead goldfish with the help of the falling pieces of spacecraft ‘skylab’.
Meanwhile the adaikala ‘swami’(monk) drowns himself in a fish bowl and turns into a rooster ,who is worshipped as god by the people of the village who then sing a requiem
With no language and few such things happen.
And in between there are side stories about a suicidal boy, a suicidal granny, kids who try to kiss the foreign girl to say hello and some crows that froze to death in the winter beacuse they lost their feathers that autumn.
This is almost the story.
The structure of the film is inspired from bedtime stories and folktales in india with lots of ellipses in the story and with emphasis on the density of its substories, therby keeping the plot itself as a formality.
