This work is influenced by my reading on quantum physics, and a visit I made to CERN, Geneva. It describes the beginnings of the universe, and over the course of time how we have developed the act of looking and analysing data connected to this. Science is now at it's most sophisticated, using tools such as ATLAS in the LHC to look backwards to the very beginning of the universe- the Big Bang. Through this work I attempt to visually describe the act of looking through quantum physics, and what I imagine the inside of the LHC is like. The title Quantizing Portents references recent developments at CERN with the discovery of a Higgs- like boson. Quantizing means to explain something in terms of quantum physics, and a portent is a sign that something momentous or calamitous is about to happen. Often in history a comet or other celestial event would be described as a portent with uneducated viewers assigning religious or superstitious significance to the sighting.
