Illustrated and designed by creative director Joel Golombeck, this adaptation of The Metamorphosis into an app for the iPad moves beyond the limitations of paper, leveraging the unique properties of the touchscreen tablet to create an as yet undefined genre. Pages do not arbitrarily separate the story, rather words, sentences, and paragraphs are all carefully arranged in a multitude of sizes, directions and shapes - all embedded inside an illustrated environment to form scenes. Moving through these scenes is not achieved by turning pages, instead, a reader uses gesture (swiping to move in all directions, pinching fingers in/out to zoom, using two fingers to rotate the screen etc.) to navigate through Kafka’s complete text in an interactive way that adds a level of meaningful metaphor to the story’s content. These illustrations and designed gestures are far from a literalization of the text, rather they exist to provide an atmosphere, deliberately leaving the openness to interpretation that makes Kafka’s work so dynamic.
