Here's some footage of a talented young lady from Magnetic Island who has made 'playing with fire' her passion and medium of expression. Watching Dominique one can only be transfixed by the way she interacts with fire due to her genuine passion for her art form. To film and edit such images is nothing short of inspiring. No matter what form of expression is undertaken by an 'artist' as long as the intention and passion for it is true to the self, it can only be beautiful. As nature is beautiful in it's true form as it does not think about what it wants to become..once thought is taken out of the creative process it communicates on a universal level which goes beyond spoken language. - Matt Whitton
The element of fire has captured humankind since the beginning of time. To focus on a single flame & watch the golden burning tip dance as the element transforms into the atmosphere I find a sense of peace. My passion is to dance & weave the flame using the art of spin apparatus which can create a mesmerising visual display. My fire dancing journey started 6 years ago when a good friend of mine travelling North Queensland was playing with poi & offered to teach me the basics of spin using practise sock poi. I was totally thrilled by this new experience & developed my spin skills fast. Once I discovered the pure enjoyment of rhythm, movement & co-ordination I was ready to dance with fire. The true saying goes “If you play with fire, you will get burnt”. But, when you understand the nature of the element you can dance with fire allowing the freedom to creatively express yourself. I now use many different fire apparatus including poi, staff, ropes, fans & hoops.
I am a person that wants to share my passion so I decided to put together a fire dancing troupe on Magnetic Island called the “Fire Flyz”. The Fire Flyz perform shows at local community events eg. World Ocean Day & Halloween, festivals eg. Wallaby Ck & Mission Beach Evolve & cultural events like the Indigenous Dreamtime Fire Story Telling Show. The Magnetic Island community absolutely love the Fire Flyz Shows, so I now also teach non-fire poi & hula hoop skills to children at local Townsville & Magnetic Island Primary Schools through the After School Activities Program. Teaching my passion to children is exceptionally rewarding to see the joy & smiles on their faces when they learn new hoop tricks & poi techniques.
To discover my passion through fire dancing has been an exciting journey & I hope to have only scratched the surface of what is to come in the future. - Dominique Abraham
