iwant to Point People to Jesus (wk.1)
In this series we want to acknowledge that during the Christmas Season we have a lot more things on our Christmas lists than… tools, lego's, video games, tv’s, i pads and keurig coffee makers.
That most of us come into the season with BIG things on our hearts –
- “I’ve been dealt a bad card in life – and I wonder where God is taking me”;
- “I have some major decisions that need to be made that can radically change the trajectory of my life”;
- “I’m tired of living for the same old same old – I’m ready to believe in something bigger or give my life to something bigger than me.”
- “God has seemed rather distant from your life… and all you’d want for Christmas is to feel as if God was actually close to you.”
*All of us are pointing people to something!
If we’re Parents – we’re pointing our kids to make good decisions
If we work –we’re pointing customers / or employees to do and buy certain things
If we go to school – we’re pushing to be better in academics and athletics
And while all those things are great to point people towards – they fall miserably short in importance to pointing people to Jesus.
We point people to Jesus b/c at the end of the day – what else matters! What do we benefit if we gain the whole world only to miss Jesus and miss heaven when we die? (Luke 9:25)
In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching. His message was, 2 “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” 3 The prophet Isaiah was speaking about John when he said, “He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the LORD’s coming! Clear the road for him!’”
3 steps to Point People to Jesus…
#1 Speak boldly about what you believe deeply.
*We understand this… b/c we speak boldly about things in our everyday lives VERY BOLDLY!
I can speak rather boldly about sports, politics, religion, work and all the while remain pretty silent about our savior Jesus Christ.
If we want to see our city, work places, homes, and church changed for Jesus Christ – we need to start speaking boldly!
If we want to see people changed for Jesus – We need to Speak Boldly!
And the real question I so desperately want you to wrestle with is… If you don’t, who will?
*Our lifestyles will also speak boldly about what we believe deeply.
Paul/ Saul _ Acts 9:28 So Saul… moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord.
Acts 14:3 So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of His grace by enabling them to do miraculous signs and wonders.
Peter and John Acts 4:31 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
Our passage in Matthew goes on to say in verse 4…
4 John’s clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey. 5 People from Jerusalem and from all of Judea and all over the Jordan Valley went out to see and hear John. 6 And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River.
#2 Leverage the influence God gives you.
When iWant to Point People to Jesus – I simply need to look around me and see who God has already strategically placed in my life.
*Who in your life needs you to SPEAK BOLDLY ABOUT WHAT YOU BELIEVE DEEPLY?
Maybe it’s an invitation to a Christmas Party at your house?
Maybe it’s a conversation over Coffee about life and the holidays?
Maybe it’s a invite to one of the next few Sundays at Church?
-Whatever it is… Leverage the influence that God gives you.
How many of us could use our area of influence. Our office, work space, network, friendships as our platform for ministry.
What if we used our area of influence as our mission field.
What if you got up tomorrow and said – Thank you God for giving me this Job, Home, Community of Friends! What if you woke up and said, "Thank you God for giving me a MISSION in life. Today I will leverage my influence to SPEAK BOLDLY ABOUT WHAT I BELIEVE DEEPLY!"
He goes on to say in verse 11…
11 “I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
#3 Brag about Jesus.
I will praise the LORD at all times. I will constantly speak his praises.
2 I will boast only in the LORD; let all who are helpless take heart.
3 Come, let us tell of the LORD’s greatness; let us exalt his name together.
