This is a video of a traditional yam counting ceremony in Rouku village, Western Province, Papua New Guinea. The languages of the region employ a senary (base-six) numeral system. The video was recorded by Christian Döhler on the 17th of October 2012. The two men doing the counting are Sékri Karémbu and Ronnie Marua. Christian is currently carrying out research for his doctoral dissertation which focusses on the Kómnzo language. Christian would like to thank all the people of Rouku village for the their hospitality and openess, for sharing their stories and for showing and explaining to him important aspects of their culture. It is their intention to share this with a wider audience.
