26 delegations of college-aged men all around the country — from the likes of Colorado College, to Colby College in Maine, and everywhere in between — meet annually year to discuss the cultural dictates of Black and Latino manhood on college campuses.
The following short film documents this conference, now in its 12th year, as it asks this year: How do we redefine masculinity — what do we keep for ourselves as things unique markers of our cultures, and what things do we let go and can identify as reductive rather than productive legacies of patriarchy?
Every era is its own unique historical vantage point and that is more true now than has ever been. Masculinity has evolved in recent years to become, rather than a straight-jacket, is an opportunity — a space in which we have the ability to exchange some of those things that might have become burdens and instead shine.
