THIS WEEK, WE'LL TALK ABOUT . . .
. . .the power of guilt.
John the Baptist's profound statement about Jesus gives us an opportunity to address one of the biggest misunderstandings about Christianity; one that keeps so many people from the faith that could make such a profound difference in their faith.
Since "the sin" is taken up and carried away, the word "sin" means so much more than behavior. One understanding of what happened when Jesus died on the cross and then was raised by the power of God is Jesus became a substitute for our sin. Sir Edwyn Hoskyns in his magnificent commentary, The Fourth Gospel, describes the dynamic of our faith that is so misunderstood. Hoskyns writes,
"Jesus bears the consequence of human sin in order that the guilt may be removed."
