Every year, over a thousand people in Los Angeles die without having anyone to claim their bodies. Many are homeless and others have family who either can't afford to pay for burial costs, or don't want to. The deceased are cremated and their ashes kept for two years in hopes that someone steps up to claim them. If no one does the city holds a mass burial. In 2012, 1656 people were buried in a simple, but solemn ceremony.
