1999 was a fun year. I used to travel with my old mate Beau Day chasing any swell we could think of. This was before digital cameras and websites told you where to surf, and when. It was a fun year.
Beau was one of the most promising young professional bodyboarders back when we were just finishing school. It was all going to plan, until one day, at our local wedge, he broke his back. Big setback! Slowly but surely, Beau built strength in his spine and began to bodyboard again. Slowly but surely getting back to where he left off.
I wanted to get him back in the limelight and in front of the big companies who were supporting bodyboarding and get him noticed again. I had the evidence on tape (remember that stuff?) and so I made a little resume for him.
Beau always had a little bit of mystique about him and was very underground and under-rated. Some of the top guys in the sport, today, were his peers and rivals and actually sourced their own copies of this video to see where Beaus surfing had come to. Remember this was before we knew what to do with the internet! There was no YouTube for another 6yrs!
This film had been lost for more than 10yrs but we finally tracked down one of the only known copies, and made it digital, before it was lost forever.
This was almost 15yrs ago and is still so relevant in todays modern surfing.2
