Homelessness decreased nationally by one percent between 2009 and 2011, but the northwest Arkansas homeless population increased 36 percent over that same time , according to the UA homeless census. Many live in "tent cities" in the south Fayetteville woods and prefer the term "urban outdoorsman," a Salvation Army official said.
