Final Project for ART 290: Experimental Ethnography and Avant-Garde Cinema.
Directed, Filmed, and Edited by Janie Gaddy and Raleigh Thompson.
This ethnographic video explores the mundane, spiritual and technical objects within a tattoo parlor. Three groups of objects are visually examined for their ritual power and practical value. By deploying a structure of contamination and sacredness across the matrix of material culture that defines the tattoo shop, the physical surfaces of objects serve as passages into a defamiliarized space where bodies are altered through careful craft.
