Alexander "The Mauler" Gustafsson faces Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the co-main event of UFC on Fox 5, Saturday, Dec. 8 in Seattle, Washington.
Gustafsson is a native of Sweden and lives in Stockholm for most of the year. He is a member of Team Alliance, one of the world's premier professional MMA teams, based in Chula Vista. For each of his fights, he spends a minimum of four weeks in San Diego training in addition to his camp based in Stockholm.
Gustafsson and his head coach, Andreas Michael, a former national boxing coach of Swedon, spent six weeks with Alliance in preparation for his bout with Rua.
Gustafsson is one of the top young up-and-comers in the 205lb division of the UFC. He has suffered just one loss, at the hands of Alliance Teammate Phil Davis, and has a professional record of 14-1 with 9 wins by knockout.
Rua is a legend in the sport. he has held titles in both the UFC and Pride Fighting Championships and has been active since 2002.
For Rua, this is an opportunity to put himself back into title contention and back on top of the light-heavyweight division.
For Gustafsson, a win against Rua would be a coronation and a right of passage into the elite of the division, and position him for a title shot.
To become a legend, he must first beat a legend.
