How many hours do you usually spend preparing for a class? 40 percent of the faculty who attended a recent CTE workshop on effective teaching said that they spent 6-12 hours per week getting ready to teach a class. 11 percent even put in 13-20 hours. Does more preparation time always guarantee higher quality teaching? Is it possible to teach more by doing less? Dr. Spencer Benson, the Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence, provides answers to these questions. During the workshop, he discussed what "effective" teaching means and how teachers could reduce their workload while increasing student learning.
