This edited documentation of LAKE by NICK+JAMES, with live sound score by Tara Jane ONeil, was presented at REDCAT (Los Angeles) as part of the New Original Works Festival 2012. LAKE is the result of a year-long collaboration between Nick Duran and Jmy James Kidd, initiated by the Los Angeles performance journal and curatorial platform Native Strategies. Throughout its development, LAKE was presented by Highways Performance Space (Santa Monica) and in This is What I Want, part of the National Queer Arts Festival at SOMArts (San Francisco), where it was supported by an ARC grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation.
LAKE is an excavation of the physical and intellectual histories that have been etched in the choreographer/performer’s bodies throughout their careers. The layers are dynamic, mixed up, and coexisting, presented through two bodies dressed alike and dancing in strict unison. LAKE is a duet centered around a queering of the conventional couple. It is like one person split in two with a reference to Narcissus serving as poetic thread—self reflection, struck by desire, a vicious cycle of remembering and reproduction.
