Rowena M. Husbands, CEO, Blink of An Eye Photography, received a Young, Gifted & Black (YGB) Award for Artistic Excellence in Photography.
When Rowena Husbands started in photography there were very few African Americans let alone women. She credits growing up with a single mother and four older brothers for the tough skin that enabled her to compete in a male dominated industry and last for 19 years.
“Men now have accepted that women are a force in this industry,” said Rowena Husbands.
When What’s The 411’s Andrew Rosario asked Rowena Husbands how has the paparazzi changed over the years, she was quick to correct the record.
“First of all, I am not paparazzi, she said. “I have never been and never will be…I am hired by the artist, the management, the publicist, the record label, or individual people, so I am not considered paparazzi...I don’t know if I would fit in good with that because they fight each other and stuff like that and I am not that kind of person. I don’t know if it has changed because I am not in that arena with the paparazzi.”
An artistic photographer, the list of people that Rowena Husbands has photographed reads like a who’s who in entertainment. The list includes Missy Elliot, Alicia Keys, Daniel Merriweather, Susan Lucci, Martha Stewart, the New York Women in Film and Television for the Muse Awards and Designing Women, among others.
Reflecting on her career Rowena Husbands said, “It has been an amazing experience for me; I have to pinch myself every day because I didn’t start out wanting to be a photographer.”
Rowena Husbands fell into photography; she wanted to be a teacher.
“It has been a wonderful and an amazing ride and I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
