I am working as a Writer & Director primarily, investigating and exploring conventions of realism in cinema, and directing actors’ improvisation in my films under this. For my research film, I set up a situation in where my actors met in a real location, a pub, while it was still open to the public, using natural lighting. I gave them a script outline a week before the shoot, which I have included in my submission. I decided to shoot the film in three takes from three different angles with Lewis Holgate as Cinematographer, whilst Connor Elliott assisted with another camera, and Mike Harris doing sound recording. I tried to keep the crew as small as possible, and our impact on filming as low as possible, to capture footage as real as possible. The idea behind the film is almost like a prequel to my Graduate piece, and I was able to give my actors ample time before shooting next year to get into role with this short exercise.
I have also worked on Francesca Ali Mirza’s research film as Sound Recordist, looking at recording in outdoor wilderness environments, to experiment and gain experience in these situations. I assisted Mike Harris with some sound recording and taking part in some improvisational acting for his film, and was an actor in Connor Elliott’s.
