Bhagirathi is one of the two rivers that unite in Devprayag (Devaprayag) and form Ganges or Ganga - the most secret river of Hinduism. Bhagirathi sources in a place called Gaumukh at the terminus of Gangotri Glacier, some 15 km up the valley beyond Gangotri village. Gaumukh being the source of Bhagirathi is regarded the main source of the Ganges and is a secret place for Hindus. There is a trekking-pilgrimage route from Gangotri to Gaumukh along the Bhagirathi valley with the scenic surroundings of the Garhwal Himalayas. The area is protected in the Gangotri National Park.
