Electricity can be thought of simultaneously as a spectre, a wonder, and a jealously guarded resource which most of us often take for granted. As a force of nature it is unpredictable and its strength can support, create or devastate. Electricity can be controlled and harnessed not only for human consumption, but also manipulated as to engage both the imagination and the senses.
Impacts, a new work by Alexandre Burton of artist collective artificiel, serves as a living reminder of the danger and impulsive strength of this phenomenon whilst capturing its sublime beauty and rhythmic potential. Five Tesla coils make up the components of this instrument, where arcs of electricity are channelled to produce an immersive musical and phenomenological experience.
Alexandre Burton's interest for new media technology stems from a desire to reveal new forms of expressivity through digital processes. Tightly integrating hardware and software, his artistic work is the result of attempts to think beyond media, in a realm where sound, images and processes coexist in a meaningful exchange.
