This video was made for the end of term celebration at an intensive Arabic summer school in 2012, organised by Middlebury College and hosted by Mills College in Oakland, CA.
I shot the video on Canon 7D with my classmates in under 2 hours and edited it on Final Cut Pro that evening. It's rough but effective and got a lot of laughs on the night. The narrative plays on the idea that Western students are left floundering in the Middle East because they've learnt a very formal kind of Arabic (fusha) in the classroom, whereas locals speak their own dialects ('aamiya).
