Over 100,000 Irish citizens emigrated to Australia in the last 4 years, according to visa statistics from the Australia Visa Bureau in London. They also show that the numbers seeking visas are growing year on year.
Emigration is back and there are few homes unaffected. I went to the departures area of Terminal 2 in Dublin Airport on the 13th of December 2012 in the hope of interviewing some of our new emigrants as they set off on their new life.
The staff member assigned to the area assured me that I would not have a problem finding one, and that they were easy to spot as they usually arrived with an entourage of well-wishers who were rarely dry-eyed.
Sure enough, the crying was heartbreaking as I witnessed families being torn apart and dreams being shattered.
This is the film. Thank you to all those for taking part and sharing what was, for many, a difficult and painful experience.
