The Stedelijk Museum is proud to present the celebrations for the centenary of the birth of John Cage – visual artist, musician, composer, and chess player. The Ives Ensemble in collaboration with soprano Claron McFadden, will perform his most celebrated pieces. In addition, John Snijders of the Ives Ensemble will take a look back on Cage’s career, filmmaker Frank Scheffer will give a performance, and two grandmasters will play a game of chess to accompany the afternoon program.
The relationship between John Cage and the Stedelijk is rooted in a shared vision of postwar avant garde art. In the context of the Stedelijk series “Muziek van nu” (Contemporary Music), the museum was privileged to welcome Cage several times, and a number of his works are also included in the collection. This year, 2012, marks the centenary of Cage’s birth, and the Stedelijk will give a central place to this versatile artist and composer during this stedelijk|special event, which is being organized in collaboration with K2G Producties.
