SPEAKING FOR CENTURIES
The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption Façade
Modeled after France’s great Gothic Cathedrals of Saint-Denis and Notre Dame, the grand Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption was begun in 1894 by Covington’s Third Bishop, Camillus Paul Maes. While much of the Cathedral Basilica’s construction and decoration was completed by 1915, much of the work envisioned by Bishop Maes remained unfinished, awaiting the contribution of future generations.
The completion of the Cathedral Basilica façade by Bishop Roger J. Foys and the faithful of Covington marks a historic moment in the life of the diocese. Executed in Bedford limestone from the same quarry the Cathedral Basilica façade was taken from in 1908, two new Marian-themed tympana and 24 saint statues complete the façade and honor diocesan patrons, institutions, and parishes. Symbolizing the deep faith of Covington’s people, the completed façade will continue, in the words of Bishop Maes, to “speak for centuries to come of the love of Christ.”
