The loop on the left (with the shape of a "7") has a shorter rod leg than the V loop on the right.
The "7" loop is, IMHO, less efficient since it results in less mass of line being accelerated on the forward stroke.
It is equivalent (although with some significant difference) to an overhead cast whose forward stroke starts before the back cast has unrolled.
