I created Clay Sculpted Figures in Terra Cotta with painted canvases of abstracted landscapes, drapes and mylar backdrops for this fantasy video drama. To enhance the story line and theatrical effect of the moving figures I have used expressive facial features montages to arouse interest in these scholarly ladies-in- waiting. Like early puppets or opera actors they are able to weave a primitive classical terra cotta world but with modern values and connotations: Commercialism seen in a cell phone, rifle weapons, boom box , guitar and beyond our imagination.
The first Video sequence of the sand dwellings explores a strong relationship to Chinese Xian caves that reveal excavated scholarly 8-11th century Tang lady figures . These antique figures are metaphors for the intensity and rituals of today’s Pop cultural life that is typically ancient Chinese archeology from Tang dancers that sing into cell phones with a earth yellow Drip painting background. I have created a dialogue about our anachronistic world full of wit and surprise. These transformed figures represent a cosmic visionary future while exotic musical instrumentation with sound effects mimic the flowing poses and gestures of the figures. The third sequence the ladies are rested and are liberated in their return to a natural garden and floral setting. In the last closing video sequence - a human hand enters the scene and exits – which represents the “maker “– an artist at work. Other terra cotta astronauts are made in later videos.
