In the video installation "Holidays" (Feiertage) one sees people contemplating. They recapitulate, remember, and count. Mats Staub has asked them a question that can only be answered with a number: How many people have you met in the last 12 months? How many professions have you worked in? How many friends do you have that you can count on? The people queried visualise and recall parts of their lives; some answer hesitantly, some promptly. Entire stories are acted out in their faces, despite the few words that are spoken or perhaps for that reason. In "Holidays" oral recounting is reduced to a minimum, however the imagination of those queried and of the audience is all the more called for. Mats Staub discovers a very unique poetry of everyday life in seemingly commonplace things. He is not interested in mere recounting. He is mainly interested in remembering. And sometimes - contrary to expectations - that is not quite so easy.
