Opioid addiction is becoming one of the world’ newest epidemics.
The Daily News of Kamloops, Canada reports newer forms of opioids like Oxycontin have created a dependence on these drugs even when they are no longer needed to treat a patient’s pain.
Speaking with the Daily News of Kamloops, Dr. Mandy Manak had this to say:
“It’s absolutely a global phenomenon.” We are kind of at a breaking point in terms of where we go from here. There are lots of people who aren’t aware that they can get help.”
The report went on to say opioids are very much available and highly prescribed. So much so that sometimes patients don’t realize what they are getting into.
Dr. Paul Lynch of Arizona Pain Specialists agreed with this assessment and spoke about how important education is when dealing with prescribing opioids.
"I think the most important thing is opioids can be useful, they do have a use in some patients. But we need to do a better job of educating the public about the risks associated with opioids, specifically the risk of death."
