Salty Dog depicts a word-smithing musician who creates a companion through her nonsensical speaking. Her creation is born as a shadow of herself, but quickly develops a narrative of their own. The two negotiate an agreement within the non-linear, arbitrary world they create together. The song is based on the early 1900s American folk song titled "Old Salty Dog Blues," famously recorded by Leadbelly.
