Reflections on the Marriage of Meaning and Purpose
Using the Family Life Chronology to Understand an Intriguing Primary Triad
by Mel McNeil
This presentation will focus on some reflections on how we can use some of Satir’s Vehicles to understand the evolution of the Satir Global since its inception in 1977. The use of Family Life Chronology and Wheel of Influence will provide a historical context to look at how triadic exploration can support a nurturing and meaning-filled organization.
Mel is a Satir Global member who currently lives in Sydney on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. He is now retired following a thirty-six year career as a clinical therapist in the addiction field and was the Director of Mental Health and Addictions for the local Health Authority for the latter ten years of his career.
Mel was initially introduced to Virginia Satir’s work through training in family therapy by two Avanta Members from Canada: Marilyn Peers and Joyce Irving. Inspired by this training, he attended a Process Community in 1982 and was invited to join the Avanta Network at that time.
Mel served on the Governing Council from 1987 to 1996 and was President of the Governing Council for the latter years of his service and received the Living Treasure Award from Avanta following his retirement from the Council. He has blended his Satir learnings into his clinical practice, family programs, management and leadership positions and board and community involvements. Currently he is spending his time working on his grandfathering skill development with his four grandchildren!
