A fortnight before his eighteenth birthday, Ken Atherton discovered his mother dead in their family home. Two years earlier, he lost his identical twin brother to a heart condition. As if that wasn’t enough, at twenty Ken was jailed along with seven other male nurses for the “grim offence” of homosexuality. That was 1954. At age sixty-two, Ken started to cross dress as a woman. Today at seventy-nine, he is the oldest drag queen in Melbourne and probably the southern hemisphere. His is the story of an ordinary man.
