Rachel Haase – Humphrey School of Public Affairs Student
I'm Rachel Haase and I was in the Master of Science in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy graduate degree program at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.
A former supervisor of mine had graduated from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and I knew that I liked the job that she was doing and that was something I could see myself doing. So I started looking into it a little more and found out that it was one of the top 15 public affairs schools which was an incentive to keep looking into it; and then I found out they had the science policy program and that was something that was unique compared to a lot of the public policy schools I was looking at.
I came from a smaller school, so coming to the University of Minnesota was a little intimidating because it was so big, but then with the Humphrey School, and then also the environmental policy program, it was much smaller, like a little family, which was nice.
I was fortunate enough to get a research position as part of my acceptance to the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and so I started off working with a professor, really getting to know some of the second year students. Everyone seemed to really care about what I was interested in and what I wanted to accomplish while at the Humphrey.
I think the Twin Cities are great. Coming from Lincoln, Nebraska, I mean it's small but it's still a city so it wasn't a complete change. What I love about the Twin Cities is that it's a lot bigger and has a lot more to offer in terms of music, entertainment, just different things to do, but it still has the small town midwestern feel. People are really friendly here. It's not intimidating and it's easy to get around.
