As we enter this New Year, we wanted to follow up with more from Johnny Montgomery – who was selected as EBDI’s resident of the year at our Job Retention Celebration Dinner in December.
As you will see in this week’s video, Mr. Montgomery’s success is the product of perseverance. Two weeks ago, we outlined how he failed in his initial efforts to get an internship. But through persistence and hard work, he is now a senior electrical CAD (computer-aided design) designer for at MC Dean Inc., an electrical design-build and systems integration firm.
In this week’s video, Johnny tells his story, and describes the help he received from Dan Baldwin and other members of our team:
“EBDI's programs are not only about relocation. What really helped me out a great deal was the moral support they provided me.”
“My story begins with EBDI assisting me, but I had to put the leg work in. During the time I was unemployed and seeking employment, I took the opportunity to go back to school with grants, federal loans and financial aid to educate myself, and be successful enough for when a job opportunity came along.”
At the Celebration, Dan, an EBDI/Mayor’s Office of Employment Development Business Services Representative, talked about his role in working with our neighbors. Talking to a room filled with pipeline participants, he said:
“My goal is to take you higher then where you're going now – whether it's MC Dean or other project sites. My job is to make life a little more easy for you, a little more money in your pocket, a little more help with promotion issues. We want to just keep on going.”
Johnny’s career path demonstrates what is possible through hard work – and taking advantage of the resources being brought to bear in East Baltimore. In a future video and email, we will take a more thorough look at EBDI’s Family Advocacy Department – which is there to provide a backstop for many of our neighbors as they work to improve their families’ lives.
May you, your family and friends have a productive and happy new year. Thank you for reading our weekly updates. And we hope you’ll watch this week’s video to hear more of Johnny’s inspirational story.
