During the course of the 4-week elective, the medical students - ranging from freshmen to seniors - took on advanced responsibilities as they worked closely with their professors. Some of the tasks they performed - like handling a cauterizing knife during surgery - are not expected of any medical students. However, due to the high volume of cases and generally low supply of trained surgical assistants, the students encountered situations they would never see in the United States.
