The Antidepressant Era
Made in 2001, screened 2002
Producer Duncan Dallas
This was the first mainstream programme ever aired that questioned antidepressants. At the time Prozac and the SSRIs, which had been launched 25 years ago in 1988, were still regarded as wonder drugs and the idea that we were being conned by wonderful marketing rather than saved by wonderful drugs was seemed unbelievable. Even bio-ethicists who now talk about conflict of interest were hailing the New Man born of Prozac.
The following year the first of 4 Panorama programmes was made and all began to change.
