I’m passionate about connecting work and working within ‘The Grey Space’ between art and science and other disciplines. It’s a little like working between what’s conscious and the subconscious. Working in that space today, when we are surrounded by so many scientific and health related questions, seems doubly important.

Cognition IX reflects and interprets cognitive dysfunction and that heightened response found in chronic illness. The series has been developed from various research sources including spending time at the Clinical Imaging and Sciences Centre in Brighton, following a trial on brain function of patients with post-exertional malaise.

The 8th Sense or ‘Interoception', is considered to be a link between bodily sensation and emotional reactions. In recent decades the idea of how the body processes bodily sensations has created the idea of the experienced phenomenologically lived body as the basis of consciousness. Limited computational and cognitive theories suggests that the study of interoception remains enactive. Absolutely delighted to hear that Cognition IX was awarded the winning image for the Art of Neuroscience. Many many thanks to the Netherlands Institute of Neuroscience for this fabulous award.
