Tao from Black & Cameron came up with a creative for a single 360° of the Land Rover for a TV commercial and pitched the concept. Due to the technical and post requirements of a full 360°, The Splice Boys and Tao came up a creative solution. We decided to divide the 360°shot into segments, each with a different location and transition point.
The shots and location were carefully chosen and directed, making sure it was as visually seamless as possible. Being a small crew meant everyone got their hand dirty to make it happen, we were left to our own devices.
We took the rig around China, shooting everything from stills, film, time lapse and lenticular 3D photography. we shot in many locations, including Tibet, Beijing, Shangrila in Yunnan Province and Dunhuang on the edge of the Gobi Desert. We set it up at 5000 metres in blizzards, got borderline hypothermia working though the night at -23 degrees Celsius, [shot in] freezing rain in lakes and rivers, covered the rig with mud and burnt ourselves to a crisp in the desert.
The equipment is all packed in custom boxing and transported either in a van or on our backs. One of the biggest difficulties is just in the sheer size of the rig, and all the interconnected and delicate parts that make it work. In a studio, this is relatively easy; in the rain or at altitude, not so much.
Some shots could take up to 10 hours to set up when working in extreme conditions because our bodies were pretty much frozen. Laura was key to navigating China and it's politics, she made production miracles happen in the most remote and harsh locations around china, EP Tao was like a big brother and made it a very rewarding outcome.
Our amazing English key grip Darren Bailey (based in Shanghai) is a godsend for us, and working in these environments without a great crew is impossible. The final post was done with the talented Barry, Lynette and managed by Steve at Techincolor Shanghai.
Tom and I survived the trip around China, thanks to great production from Laura Geagea, Tao Wright and the crew from Black and Cameron productions.
