For Andy Chen, design should be used to build empathy and to bring about social change. The design graduate from Rhode Island School of Design in the US talks about sexual health in the elderly, social exclusion and pop music.
There's a lot of cynicism in the world about the role of design, says Chen.
Chen believes that to affect design for social change it needs to be not just a bottom-up process but an inside-out one.
As a designer Chen says he is commited to using design to create empathy by allowing design to cut a path through people's lives.
