For their latest project, “The Lofts Ekamai” Raimonland mandated that both the Architect and Engineer document the project using Autodesk Revit. HB Design and Meinhardt have extensive experience using the Revit software having documented several projects previously undertaking a full BIM approach (Building information Modelling). “It is a great opportunity to work in an environment where all disciplines use the same package” Jan Appelman, managing Director of HB Design says. “This is of great benefit to the client as we can perform clash detections, and the level of coordination between drawings is better than it would be in a traditional CAD environment” he says.
John Anderson, Director at Meinhardt, supports the development of BIM. Meinhardt has been using the Revit software for several years. Initially this was only to support structural drafting of projects in Australia, however in recent years Meinhardt has started using the full capabilities of Revit for both Structural and MEP engineering– doing both design in the model as well as generating documentation from the Revit model. “We will create a structural model as well as a model for MEP building services to make sure that all is coordinated correctly from the beginning. In addition to that, we can show contractors that the construction is possible as designed. We just show them the model!” he says. Both Jan and John expect this development will have a big influence on the tender and construction processes of the projects developed using this tool as it offers far greater accuracy than traditional methods.
According to Jan, the next step is to apply this to projects where maintenance has a significant role to play during day to day operations - such as hotels. “Ideally we would like the contractor to issue an as-built model that includes all disciplines as part of the deliverables. This would be the starting point for maintenance engineers.” he says. “We are looking forward to develop the next hotel with the possibility to transfer the model to the contractor for just this purpose”.
HBD is currently developing the Hilton hotel in Dhaka, Bangladesh in Revit, while Meinhardt is involved in several other developments in Bangladesh – including the STS Hospital in Chittagong and the DPS International School in Dhaka. HB Design and Meinhardt see great possibilities to develop hotels and other projects in the region using BIM technologies.
