On Sunday, January 13, 2013, our sister in Christ, Elizabeth L., followed Jesus in Believer's Baptism.
In baptism, the believer, already having been made righteous by Christ, follows Jesus in obedience to His commands (Matthew 28:19-20) and following His own example of being baptized in the Jordan River (Matthew 3). This baptism is a external testimony of the internal reality of the believer.
In baptism, water represents judgment (i.e., the flood in Genesis 6). Being united with Christ by faith, the believer testifies that Jesus has fully taken his or her judgment on the Cross (Romans 6) by going fully underneath the water. Having their sins forgiven by faith in Jesus, the believer, like Jesus, has died to sin. However, the picture is completed by the believer coming up out of the water, representing that believer not only has freedom from condemnation through Jesus, but also new life in Him. Because Jesus was raised to new life, so is the believer. It is for this reason that baptism is such a strong and precious symbol.
