Since 2004, Itasca Life Options has partnered with MacRostie Art Center to offer an art class for adults with developmental disabilities.
Itasca Life Options (ILO) is licensed by the State of Minnesota to provide day training and habilitation services to adults with cognitive and physical disabilities living in Itasca County. The organization aims to provide personalized learning opportunities in work and development of life skills. In addition to the weekly art program, services offered include work activity, training in cooking and gardening, physical fitness, and community integration.
In 2010, the ILO art program offered through MacRostie Art Center was expanded to a weekly class. Since that time, ILO’s consumers have met with a variety of instructors to learn skills and self-expression in a variety of artistic mediums from clay sculpture and fiber art to painting, drawing, and several other 2-dementional art-forms.
As their new teacher, I wanted to introduce them to the medium of animation. I created several gridded pieces of paper, and allowed them to draw whatever they wanted inside each grid square. I then photographed the grids individually, and put them into sequence. This is our first experimentation with animation, and I'm sure we will do more in the future.
This activity was funded in part by the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council with money from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008, and by a grant from the McKnight Foundation.
